Celebrating Our Truck Drivers
We have the best truck drivers in the country and they play a big part in our company’s success. To thank them for the hard work they do each day, we participated in the nationwide “National Truck Driver Appreciation Week” August 24 through August 30, 2008, sponsored by the American Trucking Association.
Celebrating and giving backOur goal was to recognize our drivers’ dedication and commitment via a fleet-wide, week-long celebration across the country. Associates participated in events such as Patriotic Day by honoring our country and wearing red, white and blue. Furthermore, “Safe Miles Invested in Local Education” coincided with National Truck Driver Appreciation Week. The Wal-Mart Foundation donated to a local school one cent for every safe mile driven by an office’s drivers (maximum $5,000; minimum $1,000). Drivers also take the time throughout the year to help people through Wal-Mart Heart, raise funds and volunteer for the Victory Junction Gang Camp and Children’s Miracle Network, and help a traveler in need. Safety is our priorityAs “Wal-Mart’s Ambassadors of the Road,” our more than 8,000 drivers – who drive 7,000 tractors and 50,000 trailers – are committed to driving safely and providing excellent service – traveling 125,000 miles each year to deliver merchandise to our many stores and clubs. Our Wal-Mart private fleet is one of the largest and safest in the world. More than 1,960 of our drivers have more than one million consecutive accident-free miles, an increase of almost 400 drivers since last year. In fact, our fleet overall averages 2.3 million miles per preventable accident! And our private fleet is at the forefront of environmental sustainability, finding ways to haul more freight while traveling fewer miles. Dubbed the "Super Bowl of Safety," drivers competed over a four-day period challenging their driving skills as well as knowledge of safety, equipment and the industry. Wal-Mart’s Ben Moore was the national champion in flatbed. Karl Bohrer was awarded top honors in sleeper, followed by fellow Wal-Mart drivers Gary Plant and Clark Welch, sweeping the category. Our drivers are a critical part of our mission to “save people money, so they can live better” and we are proud they are part of our Wal-Mart family. Learn more about our mission.
