Our History

Where We’ve BeenSam’s Club opened in 1983 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Sam Walton’s goal was to help small businesses thrive by providing them access to the large-scale efficiencies that have helped Wal-Mart succeed. By shopping at Sam’s Club, small business owners would be able to find great deals on large quantities of items needed to run a business. Twenty-five years later, Sam’s Club continues to bring this exceptional value to members, by offering the highest quality products and services at exceptional prices. We’re able to do this by keeping our overhead low, thereby passing the savings onto our members. Where We Are TodayToday, Sam’s Club generates over $45 billion in annual sales and serves millions of members across the United States. We have nearly 600 clubs nationwide and more than 100 international locations in Brazil, Canada, China, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Each club employs an average of 160 to 175 associates. Our typical club is 110,000 to 130,000 square feet, with a wide variety of departments, including Pharmacy, Tire and Battery, Photo, Bakery, Optical, Café and Floral departments. Our members find savings on jewelry, designer goods, high-end electronics, organic foods and choice meats, among many others. Many members are surprised at the range of services we offer, like health insurance, web site development and maintenance, merchant credit processing solutions and travel programs. It’s all part of our goal to bring about solutions that will help the businesses, families and communities we serve live better. Where We’re GoingLast year, Sam’s Club sales grew 4.5 percent and for a sixth quarter in a row, Sam’s Club grew operating income faster than sales. This means opportunity—for our business, our associates and our members. We plan to bring new and better products and services to each individual member, and we are confident that this focus will bring continued success to our business. That’s success that we can share with our associates. Our growth plan includes a well-mapped strategy, and we continue to seek out great people to help us get there.
